You may have heard the term “Bias Cut” before and wondered what it meant or perhaps you associate it with luxurious red carpet gowns! It is a technique commonly used in super high end couture but you can have a little bit of this luxury too!
In this 1 day class you will be cutting and sewing a gorgeous bias cut skirt. The skill in this class is as much in the cutting of the patterns as it is the sewing so come along with you paper pattern cut but your fabric uncut.
You’ll be learning how to cut patterns on the bias, why you would bother cutting patterns on the bias and then the tips and tricks of sewing these pattern pieces together to give you a gorgeous and luxurious garment!
After Jenny made this for the September VIP sew along we all decided we needed one(or 3) in our lives so here we are! It’s the perfect skirt for winter when paired with boots and a cosy jumper and its the perfect skirt for summer when paired with a Tee and some trainers – a real all rounder for the wardrobe!
In this class we will take you through:
- How to cut your fabric on the bias
- When staystitching really matters
- Insert a channel for elastic
- Doing the neatest rolled hem ever without a fancy foot!
- How to work with slinky fabric
You will need to purchase the pattern which you can do here and we have lot’s of fabulous fabric for this skirt, get in touch and let us help you pick one!
What to bring:
- Dezi skirt pattern cut (out of paper only).
- Pre-washed fabric (not cut).
- Matching thread and elastic although this can be bought in class.
- Basic sewing kit, (scissors, pins, chalk etc).

As long as the pattern is a simple bias cut skirt then yes you can bring another pattern. This isn't a general skirt class so things like maxi skirts or denim skirts would not be taught. If you're unsure drop us a message first!
As long as you have a few sewing projects or our beginners sewing class under your belt you can come along to the Bias Cut Skirt Class. We will be using drapy fabric but if this is your first time making an item of clothing let us know and we can make sure you pick fabric that isn't too difficult to work with.
