Perhaps you have been sewing for a while, you’ve completed a few sewing patterns and you’re interested in learning how these patterns are created. Let us show you how!

In this introduction to pattern drafting class we will use your own measurements to create a basic skirt block which will then form the basis of all your skirt patterns going forward!

Pattern cutting is sometimes mistaken for cutting up a commercial pattern but it is in fact the name given to making the 2D patterns from scratch. You use a series of calculations and formulas to come up with pattern pieces that when sewn together create a garment that fits your body perfectly.

Our tutor will take you through each step in creating your own personalised pattern block before testing it out and making a toile. You will leave with a better understanding of the basics of pattern cutting and how to create your own patterns from scratch. Pretty cool eh?

What to bring:

  • A set square or ruler
  • Approx 1.5m non stretch fabric for your toile/mockup
  • Pencil
  • Calculator (can use the one on your phone)
  • Basic sewing kit (scissors, pins, unpick etc)

We have set squares and fabric available to buy in the studio so don’t worry if you don’t have these before the class.

This class is for you if you’ve done a bit of dressmaking and want to learn more. You should at least be confident with a sewing machine to get involved. Any questions about ability levels for this class please get in touch.

It's advised that you have a few dressmaking projects under your belt before embarking on the pattern cutting journey because when you make your own patterns you also have to make your own construction instructions which takes a bit of dressmaking experience to understand.

We are focusing on a skirt block for this class as it's a simple place to start your pattern cutting journey - but we may run different blocks - get in touch if you would like to make something else.

You may well get a skirt toile/mock up finished but it's unlikely you will leave with a finished garment as most of this class is focused on the drafting on paper rather than sewing the skirt.
