We are delighted to announce that Birgitta Helmersson, the godmother of zero waste pattern cutting, will be visiting us from Sweden. As part of this 2 day workshop Birgitta will then take you through a project from her book, which you will receive a copy of, giving step-by-step insight into how she designs her patterns to minimise waste.
Zero waste pattern cutting is a bit like a puzzle. Taking a pre-determined length of fabric, you strategically plan your pattern pieces to fill every inch, and then draw them directly onto the fabric. By using this unique paperless method you can eliminate both textile and paper waste from your sewing projects and take the fear out of learning to self draft and sew your own clothing.
You will spend the first day learning how to cut and sew the TEE block from the book. On the second day you will learn techniques for modifying the TEE block into new designs, giving you an insight into the possibilities, and limitations, of using zero waste sewing patterns. After completing this workshop you will know how to stitch without waste and have the foundation to tackle any of the other designs in the book. Additionally, learning how to adjust and modify the blocks will give you the confidence to begin making your very own zero waste pattern designs.
What’s included:

Zero Waste Patterns book by Birgitta Helmersson

Currently based in Malmö, Sweden, Birgitta has 20 years’ experience working as a designer, pattern-maker, and seamstress. Originally based in Australia, Birgitta worked as a designer and costume cutter for many years before starting her own practice in Melbourne in 2013. Since relocating to Malmö Sweden in 2018, she has worked from her studio/store designing and developing garments and sewing patterns using zero waste pattern cutting.
Some sewing knowledge is required for this class as it is quite a technical class, if you are unsure then drop us a message at hello@sewconfident.co.uk and we can give you some guidance.
*There is a lovely cafe in Morris Park open Mon-Sat 8-5pm if you want to treat yourself to some lunch, If your class is on a Sunday I would recommend bringing your own lunch as options around the studio are limited.

We have a start-up equipment kit that includes everything you need to get started and have ready-made fabric kits with the exact measurements to make this class as easy as possible, but if you’d like to use your own fabrics for the projects you are more than welcome to. We’ll send you an email with all the details once you sign up!
Yes! This class starts at the most basic level of sewing, so don’t worry if you’ve never even looked at a machine before- we’re here to teach you!
Of course! Our studio is equipped with sewing machines for use in all our classes, and we don’t give you any ‘homework’. Alternatively, if you’d like to bring your own machine to test out and get to grips with you are absolutely more than welcome to!
Absolutely. We start at the very beginning by learning how to thread a machine, but by the end of the course you’ll come away with 4 different projects - including putting in zips! If you have already made clothes or more complex items before you might be good enough to skip the beginners. Feel free to get in touch and we can help you!
